The area also features top-rated schools, making it a popular choice for families.

How the neighborhood evolved: Palma Ceia’s development began in 1903, at a time when golf was gaining popularity and the Tampa Bay area was experiencing a real estate boom. Attorney and real estate developer Thomas Palmer and his wife began their plan to build a subdivision  in the area, then known as Madrid. A spring that ran through the land was named Palmera Spring, which led them to name the subdivision Palmera. Eventually, the neighborhood was renamed Palma Ceia. Palma is assumed to be the Hispanicized name of the developer, while “ceia” means “supper” in Portuguese. When combined, both words don’t seem to  have much of a meaning but sounded Spanish enough in keeping with the area’s naming convention.
